But she never expected him to come back… After leaving home years earlier without even a proper goodbye to his family, Doug Poulten was considered something of a black sheep. The last thing he expects is for brotherly love to turn into something much more intense.

“You're right,” she agreed. “The end of love is the hardest thing imaginable.”

A kind of pall came over Doug and he passed his hand quickly across his face. “I'm so sorry, Whit. I can be so incredibly stupid sometimes.”

Whitney shook her head in confusion. “What are you talking about?”

“Here I am going on and on, talking about first loves and love ending, and it didn't even hit me until just now. The last thing in the world I want to do is hurt you, but it seems like I keep on doing it.”

And then she realized why he was so upset. He thought Cliff had been her first love. Whitney could feel the heat rushing to her cheeks and knew she must be turning an unbecoming shade of red. She wanted to reassure him, but how could she tell him the truth; that he had been her first love?

“Doug, it's okay. Really.”

“No,” he insisted. “I've got to learn to think before I open my big mouth. I—”

“Doug!” She reached out to grab his hand as it fiddled self-consciously with the silverware. “Doug, it's really okay. Cliff wasn't my first love.”

The silence that fell at their table seemed to extend to the entire restaurant. Doug dropped the fork and looked sheepishly at Whitney.

“He wasn't?”

“No,” she answered with a gentle smile. “He was my true love, but he wasn't the first.”

“Oh.”

Their eyes locked for one uncomfortable moment and then they looked away, glancing down and realizing simultaneously that what Whitney had meant as a gesture to silence Doug had digressed from its original purpose. Somehow, their fingers had intertwined and locked into something more intimate.
